The Fox Who Minds The Door

People sometimes ask who actually runs the front door here, since the clubhouse doesn't have a proper reception desk. The honest answer is the fox does, in the loose sense that she's usually the one who notices when someone's new and points them toward the games room instead of leaving them stood in the hallway. It's not a formal job. Nobody assigned it to her. She just started doing it early on and it stuck.

The owl, for what it's worth, prefers to stay upstairs near the notice board, keeping half an eye on which games are getting worn out and which corners need a tidy. Between the two of them the place mostly runs itself, which suits everyone fine since neither of them much likes being thanked for it directly.

What I like about the arrangement is that nobody's ever turned away for arriving at an odd hour. The lanterns stay lit late, the door's never properly locked, and if you wander in at whatever time suits you, someone will notice eventually and nod you toward a table. There's no queue system and no sign-in sheet, just the general sense that you've found the right place.

It sounds like a small thing to write a whole post about, but I think it's the part of the club I'm proudest of. Most places with a door make you feel like you need a reason to be there. This one doesn't, and I'd like to keep it that way as long as I'm the one deciding how it runs.
